Vintage hand-carved wooden sculpture deciphering a raised fist making the ’Mano Figa’ fig sign. Carved from one piece of very heavy wood. Beautiful patina.
The Mano Figa is a mildly obscene gesture of the thumb protruded between two fingers, which was commonly used in Italy as an equivalent to giving the middle finger. However, this symbol has a much longer history - it has been used as a good luck charm throughout history in many cultures, originally dating back all the way to the Etruscans. It’s supposed to provide protection against the evil eye, as the obscenity of the gesture is said to distract Satan from his conquest for your soul.
Would definitely make a fun gift, especially if you leave it up to the recipient to figure out whether it’s been given to them as an insult or a talisman for good luck.
In beautiful vintage condition with some light wear due to age: a scuff here and small dent there, but the overall appearance is excellent.
