NOTE ON THE DESIGNER: Tapio Wirkkala (1915-1985) was an extraordinarily versatile Finnish designer and sculptor, who became known all around the world in the early 1950’s, as Finnish industrial design made its international breakthrough at the triennial fairs of 1951 and 1954 in Milan. Wirkkala is a one of the major figures of post-war design and perhaps best known for his work for the Finnish glass industry including a stunning range of art objects to everyday glassware he designed for Iittala. He also designed furniture, lighting, plastic tableware and jewellery, leaving a lasting impact on Finnish design as many of his creations are still in production to this day. To put it short: Wirkkala is the rock star of Finnish modernism.
NOTE ON NEW SILVER: New silver does not contain any silver, it's named for its silvery appearance and is widely used and loved as a cheaper and more durable substitute for the real thing. It also goes nicely with real silver in table settings.
