A stunning hand-painted kokeshi doll in the sōsaku (“creative”) tradition. This mid-century piece features a stylized face and glossy black hair with expressive brushwork and ribbon-like accents. The cylindrical body is decorated with flowing calligraphy and a finely detailed ink-style landscape — likely a depiction of a local town or onsen (hot spring village), making this a souvenir-style kokeshi rooted in place and memory.

Made from turned wood and finished in warm lacquer, this doll captures the mid-century shift toward more expressive, artist-driven kokeshi — where each figure became a small canvas for individual style and regional storytelling. A faint red artist’s stamp is visible on the base, though the name is not clearly legible.

Sōsaku kokeshi like this one are getting harder to come by — especially with this level of detail and presence. Sōsaku kokeshi emerged in post-war Japan as a modern reinterpretation of traditional folk dolls. Unlike the older kokeshi styles, which followed strict regional patterns, sōsaku kokeshi allowed artists to explore new forms, motifs, and meanings — often blending figuration, calligraphy, and local landscape in a single work. With their roots in folk craft and their flair for modernism, they’ve become highly collectible — and this one, with its expressive face and inky village scene, is a particularly striking example. A real gem for anyone into characterful, well-crafted objects with a story to tell.

NOTE ON KOKESHI DOLLS - Kokeshi dolls are Japanese wooden figures crafted by artisans, woodworkers and artists. They represent traditional Japanese craftsmanship that goes as far back as the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Originally simple folk crafts made as toys for children, kokeshi dolls were also used as charms to avoid evil spirits or bad luck. They have since become popular souvenirs and symbols of Japanese culture and tradition, believed to bring good luck, health and happiness to their owners. Each Kokeshi reflects the unique style of their makers and the region where they are made. Vintage Kokeshi are highly collectible examples of Japanese folk art. Many early dolls are unsigned, as it wasn’t customary for makers to sign their work until the post-WWII tourism boom, when Western visitors began requesting signatures.
