Vintage Shell-Shaped Mini Dish by Kupittaan Savi – Finland, Mid-Century

A small but captivating piece from Kupittaan Savi, finished in the classic häränverilasite (oxblood glaze). The deep, glossy red has subtle tonal shifts that reveal the challenges of mastering this notoriously difficult glaze. Its shell-shaped form and ridges give the dish a sculptural presence despite its modest size.

Despite the dramatic name, the oxblood glaze has nothing to do with blood. It’s a ceramic term used internationally - also known as sang de boeuf in French or langyao red in Chinese porcelain - referring to a rich, copper-based glaze developed through precise firing techniques. The result is this deep, luminous red that feels both earthy and refined.

Made in Finland between the 1950s and 60s, this dish reflects the technical skill and artistry that made Kupittaan Savi such a respected ceramics house.
