Vintage Mid-Century Japanese Kokeshi Doll

A beautifully preserved example of Japanese folk art, this vintage kokeshi doll stands 19.5 cm tall and features a serene yet curious facial expression. The surface has aged to a stunning honey-golden patina, adding to its depth and charm. Hand-painted floral motifs wrap around the slender body, and the base is signed by the artist, though currently unidentified. The vertical inscription includes the characters 大正 (Taishō), likely referencing the Taishō era (1912–1926), an era remembered for its blend of tradition and gentle modernism.

Made in Japan during the late Shōwa period, most likely between the 1950’s and 70’s, this piece blends traditional Naruko-style influence with the more expressive features of sōsaku (creative) kokeshi.
