A beautifully painted traditional kokeshi doll from the Aizu region of Japan, featuring a stylised face, symmetrical form, and vibrant hand-painted floral and calligraphic details. The inscription references Byakkotai — the “White Tiger Corps,” a group of teenage samurai who became legendary after their tragic deaths in 1868 during the Boshin War. Their story remains a powerful symbol of loyalty and sacrifice in Japanese history, especially in the Fukushima region. Traditional kokeshi follow specific regional styles, often reflecting local stories, customs, or events, just like this one.

This doll was likely made as a mid-century souvenir, sold near Iimori Hill where the Byakkotai are commemorated. It combines the hallmarks of traditional kokeshi craftsmanship — turned wood, balanced proportions, regional motifs — with a sense of place and memory. We love the perfect honey patina which only time can create.

A beautiful find for collectors of folk art, Japanese design, or meaningful historical objects with strong presence and charm.

NOTE ON KOKESHI DOLLS - Kokeshi dolls are Japanese wooden figures crafted by artisans, woodworkers and artists. They represent traditional Japanese craftsmanship that goes as far back as the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Originally simple folk crafts made as toys for children, kokeshi dolls were also used as charms to avoid evil spirits or bad luck. They have since become popular souvenirs and symbols of Japanese culture and tradition, believed to bring good luck, health and happiness to their owners. Each Kokeshi reflects the unique style of their makers and the region where they are made. Vintage Kokeshi are highly collectible examples of Japanese folk art. Many early dolls are unsigned, as it wasn’t customary for makers to sign their work until the post-WWII tourism boom, when Western visitors began requesting signatures.
