A richly detailed tribal wool rug with deep, glowing tones of rust, black, indigo, and golden ochre. Hand-knotted in wool on a wool foundation, the piece features a symmetrical layout of octagonal guls and geometric latticework, framed by multiple decorative borders and a striking striped kilim end. The compact size and high knot density suggest it was likely woven for personal use — possibly as a prayer rug.
This piece likely originates from the Baluch tribes of northeastern Afghanistan or the Ersari Turkmen weaving groups nearby. Both traditions share a love of rich natural dyes, tight knotting, and bold, linear compositions. The wool is soft with a gentle sheen, and the vegetable-dyed palette has mellowed beautifully over time. A fine example of mid-20th century tribal craftsmanship with incredible character and patina.
This piece works beautifully in a wide range of interiors. Use it to add warmth to a reading nook, character to a hallway, or contrast to a minimal modern space. These smaller Baluch rugs are easy to layer, hang, or move around — ideal for anyone who wants a flexible, functional, and artful touch of textile history.

NOTE ON TRIBAL RUGS – Hand-knotted tribal rugs like this one were often made by nomadic weavers using wool from their own flocks and natural plant-based dyes. Patterns were passed down through generations but adapted freely, resulting in wonderfully unique, expressive variations. These rugs are prized not just for their durability but also for their individuality — each one a work of living design history. Vintage tribal rugs are increasingly hard to find in good condition, making this an especially collectible piece.
