A satisfyingly solid hippopotamus in carved hardwood, with beautiful grain and a contrasting lighter-toned face. The details are simple but full of character — from the ears to the little tail nub. Heavy and well-made, with a smooth finish that still shows the carver’s hand. The two-tone detail on the face is intentional and part of the original design.

Unmarked, but clearly the work of a skilled craftsperson. Likely made in mid-century Africa (possibly Kenya or Zimbabwe), this is a classic example of high-quality mid-century carvings crafted for export in the 1950s–70s. A warm, slightly offbeat decorative object — especially good on low shelves, sideboards, or anywhere that needs a touch of animal magic.

✦ Length 22 cm, height 13 cm
✦ Hand-carved solid wood
✦ Origin: likely Kenya or Zimbabwe
✦ Period: Mid-20th century
✦ Very good vintage condition with light patina and natural fissures in the wood

CONDITION & DETAILS

All items we sell are pre-loved. Most are vintage, which means they’ve been used and have lived through time.

Each piece is sold in its current condition, with signs of age or use such as patina, wear, fading, or small irregularities. Many vintage items also carry production marks from the manufacturing methods of their time. These traces are part of what makes each piece what it is, and add to its character over time.

We photograph and describe everything as clearly as we can, so you know what you’re getting. Please take a moment to review the photos and description before ordering. If anything feels unclear, just reach out - we’re happy to help.
