Vintage Carved Kokeshi with Botanical Details – Mid-Century Japan

A quietly expressive vintage kokeshi with carved features and botanical detailing. The face is delicately incised into a rounded head with a serene, closed-eye expression, while the cylindrical form is decorated with hand-carved vine and seed pod motifs. Made from richly grained wood with a smooth, natural finish.

The piece is signed with the Japanese term shinsaku (新作), meaning “original work” — a mark used by artisans to distinguish hand-carved dolls from factory-made souvenirs. Likely produced in the 1960s–80s, this is a fine example of Japan’s post-war folk craft revival, when kokeshi traditions evolved from regional toys into sculptural, collectible forms. Carved kokeshi like this are less common than painted ones, and typically show more sculptural attention to form and surface.
