A classic three-tier wall shelf by Alvar Aalto, manufactured by Artek in Finland. This is model 112B, instantly recognisable by its elegant bentwood triangle brackets and clean modernist lines. The wood has a warm, honey-toned finish — partly natural patina developed over time, partly the result of a deep, rich-toned stain. It could well be a factory test finish; the treatment is clean, subtle, and feels intentional. The overall surface is natural and refined, with just the right amount of character.

The shelf was sourced in Turku, not far from the Huonekalu- ja Rakennustyötehdas Korhonen factory that manufactured furniture for Artek. While we can’t confirm the backstory, it’s easy to imagine this being a special batch or experimental finish from the period. The absence of finger-joint construction (typical in earlier models) and the presence of screws instead of wooden dowels suggest a late 1950's – early 1960's production.

The model is sought-after and increasingly rare in good condition, and this one has all the right things going for it — a beautiful surface, solid structure, and a bit of mystery.

A perfect shelf for books, ceramics, speakers or glassware — this model is a design favourite for a reason. It adds warmth and structure to a wall without overpowering, and the bentwood brackets create just enough soft contrast.

NOTE ON THE DESIGNER – Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) is one of Finland’s most celebrated architects and designers. Known for his human-centred approach to modernism, he created timeless designs that combined functionalism with natural materials and soft geometry. Aalto’s bentwood furniture for Artek remains iconic — particularly pieces like the Model 112 series, which balance simplicity with quietly radical forms.
