Kijiyama-style Kokeshi are known for their elongated bodies, simple facial features, and painted motifs that often nod to regional flora. This one feels especially fresh, with a vibrant flower that almost seems to be mid-bloom. Made in Japan in the 1970's, it’s a collectible with soul—and a perfect pop of character for your shelf or windowsill.

NOTE ON THE ARTIST - Sato Shuichi (1927–2009) was a distinguished Japanese artisan renowned for his mastery in crafting Kijiyama-style Kokeshi dolls. The Kijiyama style, originating from the Akita Prefecture, is characterized by its simple, cylindrical forms and often features hand-painted floral or ring designs. Sato Shuichi's work is celebrated for its adherence to these traditional aesthetics, reflecting both the cultural heritage and the artisan's personal craftsmanship. Collectors and enthusiasts highly value his pieces for their authenticity and artistry.

NOTE ON KOKESHI DOLLS - Kokeshi dolls are Japanese wooden figures crafted by artisans, woodworkers and artists. They represent traditional Japanese craftsmanship that goes as far back as the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Originally simple folk crafts made as toys for children, kokeshi dolls were also used as charms to avoid evil spirits or bad luck. They have since become popular souvenirs and symbols of Japanese culture and tradition, believed to bring good luck, health and happiness to their owners. Each Kokeshi reflects the unique style of their makers and the region where they are made. Vintage Kokeshi are highly collectible examples of Japanese folk art. Many early dolls are unsigned, as it wasn’t customary for makers to sign their work until the post-WWII tourism boom, when Western visitors began requesting signatures.
