Vintage 1970’s ‘Hopla’ Pitcher by Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala

This elegant pitcher is designed by the Tapio Wirkkala for Iittala in the 1970’s. The perfect example of Wirkkala’s ability to fuse sculptural forms and function, this pitcher is striking in its simplicity, featuring a sleek silhouette with a softly curved handle rendered in pressed clear glass. Though minimalist at first glance, there's a quiet energy to it. We love the refined, upbeat vibe.

Designed for the ‘Hopla’ glassware series — a quiet favorite among collectors — this piece was made using pressed glass, not hand-blown. The technique created those signature textured surfaces that look like melting ice or tree bark, a classic Wirkkala move.

NOTE ON THE DESIGNER - Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was an extraordinarily versatile Finnish designer and sculptor, whose career took off internationally in the early 1950’s when Finnish industrial design made a splash at the Milan Triennials of 1951 and 1954. A leading figure of post-war design, Wirkkala is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work in glass, creating everything from sculptural art pieces to everyday tableware for Iittala. Wirkkala also designed furniture, lighting, plastic tableware, and even jewelry, leaving a lasting legacy on Finnish design. Many of his iconic creations are still in production today. To put it simply: Wirkkala is the rock star of Finnish modernism.
