Tall Lidded Woven Basket from Artek – Handcrafted Rattan - Mid-Century Finland

A tall, sculptural woven basket with a gently domed lid and wide arched handle that rises in a continuous curve from the rim. Made from handwoven split rattan, the piece has a stunning honey tone, soft surface sheen, and carefully crafted details like tight cane wrapping at the handle anchors.

This piece comes from an authenticated collection of vintage baskets sold by Artek in the 1950s-1960s. Few examples remain in such pristine condition — and even fewer still retain their original lids. 

Founded in 1935 by Alvar and Aino Aalto, Maire Gullichsen, and Nils-Gustav Hahl, Artek set out to merge modernist ideals with handcraft and tradition. Alongside their iconic furniture, Artek also offered textiles, baskets and utility objects made by Finnish artisans who shared their values: clarity of form, functional elegance, and everyday materials elevated through design.

This basket is a rare example of that lesser-known legacy — a quietly exceptional object made to live with. Perfect for storing kindling, socks or other small textiles — or use it as a sculptural container on the floor, shelf or sideboard.
