NOTE ON THE DESIGNER – Tapio Wirkkala (1915–1985) was an extraordinarily versatile Finnish designer and sculptor, whose career took off internationally in the early 1950’s when Finnish industrial design made a splash at the Milan Triennials of 1951 and 1954. A leading figure of post-war design, Wirkkala is perhaps best known for his groundbreaking work in glass, creating everything from sculptural art pieces to everyday tableware for Iittala. Wirkkala also designed furniture, lighting, plastic tableware, and even jewelry, leaving a lasting legacy on Finnish design. Many of his iconic creations are still in production today. To put it simply: Wirkkala is the rock star of Finnish modernism.
