A confident little ceramic vase made by Carstens Tönnieshof in West Germany. Glazed in deep matte black and decorated with an abstract leaf-like motif and graphic lines in pale blue, white, and ochre. The slender neck and rounded base give the piece a modernist silhouette, while the surface pattern adds a playful, almost hand-drawn energy.
A true pocket-sized piece of postwar design flair. Early Carstens vases from the 1950s (pre–Fat Lava era) are more rare and design-forward than their later counterparts, and are becoming increasingly collectible - especially hand-decorated pieces with abstract designs, like this little gem.
