Studio Vase by Valentina Modig-Manuel – Finland, 1968

A rare handthrown ceramic vase by Valentina Modig-Manuel, dated and signed 1968. Crafted in rugged stoneware and finished with a layered matte glaze in deep turquoise, blue, and black, the surface has a quietly expressive texture and a strong mid-century presence. The black rim gives it just the right edge.

This is a true studio piece — made, signed, and fired by the artist herself — and examples of Modig-Manuel’s later work don’t appear on the market often. A timeless object with real character.

NOTE ON THE ARTIST – Valentina Modig-Manuel (1907–2005) was a pioneering Finnish ceramic artist who co-founded Studio Keramos in 1937 — the country’s first independent ceramics studio. That same year, she received a bronze medal at the Paris World’s Fair. Modig-Manuel had previously worked for Kera and Kupittaan Savi, eventually becoming artistic director at Kera. Her work bridges early modern Finnish craft and expressive post-war studio ceramics.
