Oiva Toikka ‘Iglu’ Art Glass by Nuutajärvi - Finland, 1970s

A hand-blown glass object from Oiva Toikka’s Iglu series, made at Nuutajärvi in the 1970s. Part of his experimental work from the decade, the series explores bubble-rich, softly drifting glass. Each piece was shaped and finished by hand, giving every example its own character.

The compact, square form has a clear base tone with a slightly milky, translucent cast. The soft geometry shows Toikka’s interest in glass as a material: fluid, imperfect, and full of variation.

Stands easily on its own as an art object, but works equally well as a small trinket dish or for thin candles. Fits easily into both minimal and more layered settings, adding a calm contrast to wood, stone, or metal surfaces.

NOTE ON THE DESIGNER
Oiva Toikka (1931–2019) was one of Finland’s leading glass artists, known for his imaginative approach to form and material. At Nuutajärvi, he created a wide range of art glass and series production, often blurring the line between design and sculpture. The Iglu series reflects his experimental 1970s period — a hands-on exploration of technique and expression.
