S. Sipilä - Untitled (1956)
Watercolor or gouache on paper
Framed size 47 x 56 cm
A beautifully balanced still life from 1950’s Finland. Signed S. Sipilä, this piece could easily be mistaken for a rare and highly valuable work by Sulho Sipilä (1895–1949), the renowned Finnish painter known for his quietly captivating domestic scenes and still lifes. However, the date - 1956 - places it six years after his death, ruling out the possibility. Still, the visual language is oddly familiar: soft pastels and fluid, confident brushwork with a rhythm reminiscent of Sipilä and other Nordic modernists of the post-war era.
While we were secretly hoping for a rare Sulho Sipilä, we’re just as charmed by this gem painted by another artist, perhaps a relative influenced by him, as it’s a visually striking, well composed example of mid-century Finnish modernist art, at a much more approachable price point.
The artwork depicts a quiet, luminous moment painted in soft pastels with a striking cobalt blue accent, giving it a dream-like quality. A refined piece with timeless appeal.
