Large Vintage Kokeshi Doll by Sato Suigai – Mid-Century Japan

A beautifully balanced kokeshi doll by renowned artisan Sato Suigai, featuring an elongated silhouette, serene expression, and deep plum-toned body carved with delicate wildflower motifs. The surface is subtly burnished, with a high bun and downcast eyes lending a quiet, meditative presence. Signed on the base in brush script with Suigai’s red stamp seal.

Suigai (1920–1998) was one of the leading figures in the creative kokeshi movement of the mid-20th century, bringing his background in painting to the craft of doll-making. His works combine traditional Japanese aesthetics with modernist sensibilities — elegant, understated, and precise. This piece reflects his typical palette and botanical carving style, and is a fine example of the refined direction kokeshi took in the post-war era.

NOTE ON THE ARTIST – Sato Suigai (1920–1998) was a celebrated Japanese kokeshi artist from Gunma Prefecture. Originally trained as a painter, he turned to doll-making in the late 1940s and became one of the defining figures in the Sosaku (creative) kokeshi movement. His dolls are known for their elegant forms, botanical engravings, and quiet emotional depth. Today, his works are highly sought after by collectors worldwide.
