An early example of the work of Japanese woodworker and artisan Kato Kuen (1876-1971), this stunning sosaku kokeshi doll is hand-carved entirely from cherry wood and has a removable base, that contains a parchment scroll including a personal wish. Handpainted only on the head, featuring delicate black brushstrokes and muted gold details. We love her serene, almost meditative appearance. Made in Japan in the 1960's. Unsigned, as most of Kuen's early works were.
This large kokeshi depicts Bosatsu Kannon, one of Japan's most beloved bodhisattva(a revered Buddhist entity) in Japanese mythology. She is widely worshipped as the Japanese goddess of compassion and mercy, keeper of peace and reliever of troubles. She is believed to help women become pregnant and is also associated with vegetarianism through her compassion.
In very good vintage condition. Some wear from age and use, including two dents on the back (one on the back part of the head, another on the lower part of the body).
Height 36 cm
Ø 9 cm
NOTE ON KOKESHI DOLLS: Kokeshi dolls are Japanese wooden figures crafted by artisans, woodworkers and artists. They represent traditional Japanese craftsmanship that goes as far back as the Edo period (1603 - 1868). Originally simple folk crafts made as toys for children, kokeshi dolls were also used as charms to avoid evil spirits or bad luck. They have since become popular souvenirs and symbols of Japanese culture and tradition, believed to bring good luck, health and happiness to their owners. Each Kokeshi reflects the unique style of their makers and the region where they are made. Vintage kokeshi dolls are sought-after, highly collectable and valued pieces of Japanese folk art. Many vintage dolls are unsigned, because it wasn’t common for artisans to sign their creations until tourism to Japan increased after WWII and Westerners insisted on signatures, as they didn’t know the artists.
