A classic example of small-scale French studio pottery, this rounded vase was made by ceramicist Jean-Marie Dehoux in Luc-en-Diois, a mountain village in southeastern France. Thrown in stoneware and finished with a fine speckled glaze that shifts from warm honey to soft ivory, it has a balanced, generous shape and a beautifully fluid surface.
Dehoux was part of a generation of rural French potters who worked outside the spotlight, quietly producing functional, well-made ceramics in the 1960s–80s. His pieces were often sold locally or in small galleries, and each one was signed with a full place name – in this case, DEHOUX JM LUC EN DIOIS.
This one feels solid in the hand, but not heavy. Use it as a vase for short stems or dried grasses, or leave it empty — the form holds its own. A calm presence on a shelf or table, and a lovely piece to live with.
