A small ceramic bird whistle with a softly abstract form and earthy palette. Glazed in warm speckled brown with a cool grey-blue head, and carved with a band of rhythmic geometric motifs. A working whistle with a clear tone — both a functional object and a characterful piece of studio folk art.
Ceramic whistles in the shape of animals have been part of Finnish and Baltic folk culture for centuries. While traditionally made for children, they’ve also been collected as symbols of protection and joy. This piece carries that heritage with a distinctly modernist touch, blending local craft traditions with a refined sensitivity to form and surface.
Signed underneath with the initials ‘AT’ and marked ‘Nurmes’, it likely comes from a regional Finnish studio working in the 1970s. We love the balance between its playful shape and quiet presence. A small but expressive object that adds charm to a shelf, desk, or nursery — and makes a satisfying sound when you give it breath.
