Tapani Mikkonen (1952–2014) was a Finnish painter and printmaker known for his abstract, large-scale graphic works and raw, dynamic mark-making. He approached printmaking with the same expressive force as painting, often creating powerful compositions with broad strokes and playful tension. Though his works are abstract, many suggest hidden figures or dreamlike landscapes. Mikkonen received the Finnish State Award for Visual Arts in 2003 and spent most of his career in Espoo, working quietly outside the mainstream while building a dedicated following in Finnish contemporary art circles. 

The artist’s printed works are relatively scarce, and this early 1980’s lithograph is a rare find. With its wild energy and graphic depth, it’s a striking example of his visual language at the time — instinctive and charged, and a strong standalone piece for any collection leaning towards abstract or Nordic post-war art.
